Just a five-minute drive from Kaikōura’s town centre, Point Kean is where the wild Tasman Sea meets a sprawling colony of New Zealand fur seals. The air is thick with the smell of salt and the guttural barks of seals lounging on the rocks or bobbing in the surf. This is one of the most accessible wildlife encounters on the South Island – no boats, no tours, just you and hundreds of seals going about their daily business against a backdrop of dramatic sea cliffs and the distant Kaikōura Ranges.
Highlights & What to See
- Seal spotting at the colony: Walk the short boardwalk loop right through the colony; pups play in rock pools while adults snooze on the boulders. Keep a respectful distance – these are wild animals.
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway: The full 11.7 km loop starts here, taking you past seal colonies, paua-shell middens, and ancient Māori fishing sites. Even a short stroll to the point rewards you with panoramic views.
- Whale watching: The same rich waters that feed the seals also attract sperm whales, dusky dolphins, and albatross. Several operators run trips from the town harbour.
- Sunset photography: The golden light hitting the seals and the frothy sea makes for unforgettable images. Bring a telephoto lens.
Suggested Time to Spend
An hour is enough for a relaxed loop of the boardwalk and seal photography. If you plan to hike the full Peninsula Walkway, budget 3–4 hours. Most travellers combine a morning at the seal colony with an afternoon whale-watching trip – it’s an easy, wildlife-packed day.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kaikōura town: Grab a crayfish (lobster) from a roadside stall or the famous Green Dolphin restaurant – this is the seafood capital of the South Island.
- Kaikōura Whale Watching: Year-round tours to see sperm whales, humpbacks (in season), and orcas – book ahead in summer.
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway: Extend your walk to the lighthouse or the old whaling station ruins for more history and views.
- Ohau Point Seal Colony: A quieter colony 15 minutes north, great for avoiding crowds.
- Marlborough Wine Region: A 90-minute drive north; pair your wildlife adventure with Sauvignon Blanc tastings in Blenheim.
