Perched between the rugged Kaikōura Ranges and the Pacific Ocean, Kaikōura Town is a small coastal gem that punches well above its weight. Famous for its whale watching and seals, this town is a pit stop that easily becomes a highlight of any South Island road trip. The air smells of salt and fish and chips, and the mountains seem to rise straight out of the sea.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend one full day in Kaikōura, which is enough for a whale-watching tour (half-day) and a walk on the peninsula. If you're a keen hiker or want to explore the nearby mountains, consider two nights and a full day in between. The town itself is compact and walkable, so you can easily grab a coffee and browse the shops between activities.
