Ohau Point Seal Colony

Just a short drive north of Kaikōura on State Highway 1, Ohau Point Seal Colony is one of New Zealand's most accessible and rewarding wildlife encounters. Here, dozens of New Zealand fur seals (kekeno) lounge on rocky outcrops and in the crashing surf, their loud barks and playful antics creating a memorable spectacle against the dramatic backdrop of the Pacific Ocean and rugged coastline. The colony is easily viewed from a designated lay-by and short walking track, making it a perfect quick stop for self-drive travellers exploring the Kaikōura coast.
