Just a short drive north of Kaikōura, Ohau Stream Walkway leads you through a lush pocket of native forest to a series of cascading waterfalls. The main attraction is the lower pool where, from winter to early spring, newborn New Zealand fur seal pups gather to play and learn to swim in the cool, clear water—a heart-melting wildlife encounter that’s unique to this coast. The walk itself is easy and family-friendly, with the sound of the stream and birdsong accompanying you.
Highlights & What to See
- Fur seal pups at play: From around June to September, seal pups splash and tumble in the lower waterfall pool while their mothers feed at sea. It’s an unforgettable, up-close wildlife experience.
- The waterfall itself: A pretty 3m cascade dropping into a deep, dark pool surrounded by mossy rocks and ferns—photogenic at any time of year.
- Short bush walk: The 10-minute track winds through a narrow gorge lined with native trees like kōwhai and māhoe, with the stream burbling alongside.
- Upper falls option: A steeper, rougher track continues to the upper falls (about 20 minutes one way) for a quieter view and a longer walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30–45 minutes for the return walk and plenty of time to watch the seal pups. The track is short, but the wildlife is so engaging you’ll want to linger. Best visited in the morning or late afternoon when the seals are most active. Combine with a morning whale-watching tour or a drive along the coast.
