Mangamaunu Beach, a wild stretch of black sand and surf just north of Kaikōura, offers an untamed slice of the Pacific coast. With the Seaward Kaikōura Range rising dramatically behind it, this beach feels both remote and accessible—a place where you can watch the waves roll in while snow-dusted peaks loom overhead. It’s a favourite among local surfers and a serene spot for a contemplative walk, far from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Black Sand & Surf: The dark volcanic sand is striking against the turquoise water. If you’re a surfer, bring your board—the beach picks up swell from all directions and offers consistent breaks.
- Mountain Backdrop: The sheer cliffs and peaks of the Kaikōura Ranges create a dramatic photo op, especially in the late afternoon light when the mountains glow orange.
- Seal Spotting: New Zealand fur seals often haul out on the rocks at the northern end of the beach. Keep a respectful distance—they’re wild and can move surprisingly fast.
- Whale Watching: While you can sometimes see spouts from shore, the best views are on a boat tour from Kaikōura. Sperm whales are the main draw, but you’ll also see dusky dolphins and albatross.
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway: A short drive south, this coastal walk offers seal colonies, blowholes, and sweeping views back toward Mangamaunu.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is plenty for Mangamaunu Beach. Spend an hour or two walking the sand, watching surfers, and photographing the scenery. If you’re a surfer, time your visit with the tide—local surf shops in Kaikōura can give you the latest conditions. Combine it with a whale-watching tour in the morning and the Peninsula Walkway in the afternoon for a full day on the coast.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kaikōura Township: Just 10 minutes south, grab a coffee or a famous crayfish (lobster) at one of the seafood shacks.
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway: A 7.7 km loop with seal colonies, limestone cliffs, and a seal pup nursery in winter.
- Ohau Point Seal Colony: A short drive north, you can see dozens of seals lounging on the rocks, often with pups in summer.
- Whale Watch Kaikōura: The world-class whale-watching tours operate year-round and are a must-do.
- Hundalee Hills & Inland Route: For a scenic drive back to Christchurch, take State Highway 70 through the Hundalee Hills for mountain views and quiet roads.
