Ohau Stream Walkway is a short, family-friendly stroll through lush native bush to a stunning waterfall and natural rock pool. The real draw? From June to October, New Zealand fur seal pups use this pool as a playful nursery while their mothers fish at sea. It’s an utterly endearing wildlife encounter that feels like a secret – and it’s completely free.
Highlights & What to See
- Fur seal pups at play: In winter and spring, dozens of seal pups splash and snooze in the waterfall pool. Keep a respectful distance (at least 10 metres) and watch their antics – they’re endlessly entertaining.
- Ohau Waterfall: A pretty cascade plunging into a deep, clear pool. Even without seals, the setting is tranquil and photogenic.
- Bush walk: A 20-minute (each way) easy walk along a well-formed track through native forest with ferns and mossy rocks. Listen for bellbirds and tūī.
- Interpretive signs: Learn about the seal colony and local ecology on the short trail.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the walk and seal-viewing. It’s a perfect quick stop on the drive between Kaikōura and Blenheim – combine with a whale-watching trip or the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway for a full day of coastal nature.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kaikōura: The town itself offers whale watching, dolphin encounters, and excellent seafood (especially crayfish).
- Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway: A spectacular coastal clifftop walk with seal colonies and seabird colonies.
- Mangamaunu Beach: A wild, scenic beach just south of Ohau Stream, great for a picnic and spotting seals on the rocks.
