Okarito Lagoon, New Zealand’s largest unmodified wetland, is a serene wilderness of mirror-still waters, dense kahikatea forest, and snow-capped Southern Alps backdrop. This coastal lagoon, just north of Franz Josef Glacier, is a birdwatcher’s paradise and a haven for kayakers seeking solitude. The small settlement of Okarito (population ~30) adds to the off-grid charm, with no shops or fuel – just pure West Coast tranquility.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend half a day to a full day exploring Okarito Lagoon. If you’re just paddling and doing the Trig Track, half a day is enough. For a deeper experience – including the Three Mile Pack Track and a kiwi walk – dedicate a full day. Overnighting in Okarito (there are a few holiday homes and a backpackers) allows you to catch the magical sunrise mist over the lagoon.
