Okarito Lagoon, New Zealand’s largest unmodified wetland, is a serene wilderness of mirror-still waters, dense kahikatea forest, and snow-capped Southern Alps backdrop. This coastal lagoon, just north of Franz Josef Glacier, is a birdwatcher’s paradise and a haven for kayakers seeking solitude. The small settlement of Okarito (population ~30) adds to the off-grid charm, with no shops or fuel – just pure West Coast tranquility.
Highlights & What to See
- Kayak the Lagoon: Paddle through silent channels fringed with flax and rushes, spotting white herons (kotuku), royal spoonbills, and the rare Okarito kiwi. Guided tours or rental kayaks are available from the Okarito boat shed.
- Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary: This protected area is a stronghold for the rowi, the rarest kiwi species. Join a nocturnal guided walk to hear their calls, or simply explore the tracks at dawn.
- Trigon Track: A short, steep climb to a trig point offering panoramic views over the lagoon, the Tasman Sea, and the Franz Josef Glacier valley – best at sunset.
- Three Mile Pack Track: A coastal walk through nikau palm forest to a wild, windswept beach with driftwood sculptures and crashing surf.
- Okarito Wharf: Stroll out over the still waters at dawn or dusk for reflections of the mountains and a chance to see feeding wading birds.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend half a day to a full day exploring Okarito Lagoon. If you’re just paddling and doing the Trig Track, half a day is enough. For a deeper experience – including the Three Mile Pack Track and a kiwi walk – dedicate a full day. Overnighting in Okarito (there are a few holiday homes and a backpackers) allows you to catch the magical sunrise mist over the lagoon.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier: Only 20 minutes south, you can combine a lagoon paddle with a glacier valley walk or heli-hike.
- Whataroa: The White Heron Sanctuary Tour departs from here (seasonal) – a boat trip to the only mainland breeding colony of kotuku.
- Lake Mapourika: A stunning dark-water lake just north of Franz Josef, perfect for kayaking or a scenic drive.
- Hokitika Gorge: About 1.5 hours north, famous for its turquoise water and swingbridge – a classic West Coast photo stop.
