Westland National Park is a realm of extremes, where the Southern Alps plunge straight into the Tasman Sea. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a land of glaciers, rainforests, and dramatic coastlines. The park is most famous for the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, but its beauty extends far beyond these icy rivers. Here, you can walk through ancient podocarp forests, spot rare birds like the kea and the Okarito kiwi, and witness the raw power of nature as avalanches thunder down from the ice.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

To truly appreciate Westland National Park, plan for at least two to three days. One day can be dedicated to the Franz Josef Glacier area, including a glacier walk or heli-hike and a visit to the West Coast Wildlife Centre. A second day allows for exploring Fox Glacier and Lake Matheson. If you're an avid hiker, add a third day for the Copland Track or a kayak trip on Okarito Lagoon. With limited time, focus on one glacier and Lake Matheson – you can cover both in a long day.
