Punakaiki, on the rugged West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, is famous for the Pancake Rocks and blowholes – a dramatic limestone formation that erupts with seawater at high tide. This small settlement is a must-stop on the scenic drive between Greymouth and Westport, offering coastal walks, lush rainforest, and a laid-back vibe that captures the wild spirit of the West Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Pancake Rocks and Blowholes: The star attraction – a short, easy walk leads you over layered limestone stacks that look like stacks of pancakes. At high tide, the blowholes shoot plumes of spray through the rock, especially dramatic with a westerly swell.
- Paparoa National Park: This park protects a stunning mix of karst landscape, nikau palm forest, and river valleys. The Pororari River Track is a great half-day walk through limestone gorges and lush forest, or try the longer Inland Pack Track for a multi-day adventure.
- Truman Track: A short 15-minute walk from the highway leads to a beautiful, wild beach with sea caves and rock arches – perfect for a quick taste of the coast.
- Punakaiki Cavern: A natural limestone cave just off the main road, free to explore with a torch – a fun, quick detour for those curious about the area's geology.
- Fox River Caves: A bit further north, these caves offer glowworm displays and limestone formations; guided tours available.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours here, enough to do the Pancake Rocks walk and one short forest or beach walk. To fully appreciate Paparoa National Park, consider an overnight stay – there are a couple of lodges and a campground. If you're driving the West Coast, Punakaiki makes a perfect lunch stop or a half-day detour.
