Mirror, mirror on the water—Matheson Lake is New Zealand’s ultimate reflection spot. Tucked into a quiet pocket of West Coast rainforest near Fox Glacier, this small, dark lake is famed for its perfectly still surface that mirrors Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman at dawn. The surrounding rimu and kahikatea forest feels ancient, and the air smells of damp earth and moss. A walk here is less a hike and more a meditation, with the Southern Alps looming overhead like silent guardians.
Highlights & What to See
- Dawn reflection: Arrive early—before 7am in summer—to catch the mirror-calm surface and the first pink light on Aoraki. The viewing platform at the far end of the track is the money shot.
- Circle Lake Walk: An easy 2.6 km loop on a well-formed gravel path, passing through tall forest with interpretive signs about the local ecology and Māori history.
- Jetty viewpoint: Halfway around, a small jetty juts out over the lake—perfect for a selfie or a quiet moment. The mountains reflect best from this spot.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for native birds like the kererū (wood pigeon) and fantail flitting through the canopy. The lake is also home to longfin eels.
- Nearby Fox Glacier township: Just 5 km away, this small hub offers cafés, a general store, and the Glacier Viewing Gallery for when you need a coffee and a dose of glacial history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate 1–2 hours for the walk and photo-taking. Most visitors come for sunrise (allow 1.5 hours from Fox Glacier or 30 minutes from the car park), then head back for breakfast. If you’re not an early bird, late afternoon can also yield reflections, though the light is less dramatic. The loop itself takes 40 minutes at a leisurely pace.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier: Drive the short distance to the glacier car park for a view of the terminal face, or take a guided heli-hike onto the ice.
- Lake Gault: A lesser-known gem with a boardwalk loop through wetland and forest, about 15 minutes south—great for birding and solitude.
- Gillespies Beach: A wild, black-sand beach 20 minutes west of Fox Glacier, where you can see seal colonies and remnants of gold-mining history.
- Franz Josef Glacier: 25 km north, with its own glacier walks, hot pools, and the West Coast Wildlife Centre (home to kiwi and tuatara).
