Fox Glacier Township is a tiny alpine settlement that serves as the launchpad for one of New Zealand's most dramatic natural wonders: the Fox Glacier. This 13-kilometre-long river of ice descends from the Southern Alps almost to sea level, surrounded by temperate rainforest. The village itself has a frontier feel, with a handful of cafes, a general store, and helicopter bases buzzing with activity. Despite its size, it punches well above its weight in terms of raw, elemental beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Fox Glacier Valley Walk: A gentle 30-minute walk from the car park to a viewpoint where you can see the glacier's terminal face and hear its creaks and groans – a front-row seat to glacial dynamics.
- Lake Matheson: A short drive away, this mirror-still lake offers iconic reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, especially at dawn or dusk. The 2.6-km loop track is a must.
- Heli-Hike or Glacier Walk: Join a guided tour onto the glacier itself, either by heli-hike (landing on the ice) or a valley walk that gets you close to the terminal face. Book ahead in peak season.
- Gillespies Beach: A wild, black-sand beach 20 minutes west, with a short walk to a historic gold-mining settlement and seal colony – a stark contrast to the icy interior.
- Fox Glacier Weir Walk: A short path from the township leads to a weir on the Fox River, offering views of the glacier's lower reaches and the surrounding bush.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend one full day in Fox Glacier Township: a morning walk to the glacier viewpoint, afternoon at Lake Matheson, and perhaps a heli-hike. If you're short on time, a half-day is enough for the valley walk and lake, but to truly absorb the atmosphere – and factor in weather delays – an overnight stay is ideal. Two days allow for a heli-hike and exploration of Gillespies Beach.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Haast Pass / Makarora: Heading south, the road over Haast Pass winds through ancient rainforest and past stunning waterfalls (like Thunder Creek Falls) – a scenic drive into the Mount Aspiring National Park.
- West Coast Glaciers Scenic Drive: The stretch of State Highway 6 between Fox and Franz Josef is a breathtaking route through lush rainforest with sudden views of the ice-capped peaks.
