Lewis Pass

Lewis Pass, one of New Zealand's three main alpine passes crossing the Southern Alps, offers a wild and remote journey through ancient beech forests, tussock-covered valleys, and dramatic mountain scenery. This less-traveled route between the West Coast and Canterbury is a haven for hikers, nature lovers, and those seeking solitude. The pass itself sits at 864 meters, but the surrounding peaks and valleys are the real draw. With hot springs, pristine rivers, and excellent short walks, Lewis Pass is a perfect stop on a South Island road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travelers drive through Lewis Pass in a few hours, but to truly appreciate the area, plan at least half a day for a walk and a soak at Maruia Springs. If you're a keen tramper, allow a full day for the Ada Pass Track or a section of the St James Walkway. As part of a self-drive itinerary, Lewis Pass makes a fantastic one-night stopover between the West Coast (like Reefton or Greymouth) and Canterbury (Hanmer Springs or Christchurch).
