Lake Mahinapua is a serene, bird-filled lagoon just south of Hokitika on the West Coast. Once a coastal lagoon now separated from the Tasman Sea by a narrow strip of dunes, it offers peaceful walking trails, kayaking, and a glimpse into the region's gold-mining past. The lake's calm waters are perfect for a gentle paddle or a quiet picnic, and the surrounding podocarp forest is alive with native birdsong.
Highlights & What to See
- Mahinapua Walkway: A gentle 4 km loop through lush rainforest and along the lake edge, with plenty of birdlife and historical relics from the gold-rush era.
- Kayaking & Canoeing: Hire a kayak or bring your own to explore the tranquil waters, weaving through submerged tree stumps and spotting pukeko and shags.
- Mahinapua Creek & the Beach: A short walk leads to a wild West Coast beach, where driftwood and dramatic surf meet the Tasman Sea.
- Historic Gold-mining Remnants: Look for old water races and sluicing channels along the walkway, evidence of the area's 1860s gold rush.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal: spend 1–2 hours on the walkway, then another hour or two kayaking or relaxing by the lake. If you're short on time, the walk alone can be done in 90 minutes. Combine with a visit to Hokitika or the nearby Treetop Walkway for a full day out.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hokitika: Just 10 km north, this charming town offers pounamu (greenstone) galleries, a lively Saturday market, and the famous Hokitika Gorge.
- Treetop Walkway: A 20-minute drive east, this elevated walk through the canopy of a rimu forest provides a different perspective on West Coast rainforest.
- Shantytown: A living-history gold-mining village 8 km south, perfect for families and history buffs.
- Okarito Lagoon: 30 km further south, a vast tidal lagoon with kayaking and the best chance to see kotuku (white herons).
