Haast Pass is one of New Zealand's most dramatic alpine crossings, slicing through the Southern Alps to connect the West Coast's wild rainforests with the vast lakes of Central Otago. The road itself is an adventure, winding past cascading waterfalls, ancient beech forest, and glacier-carved valleys. Stop at every lookout — this is a journey where the drive is as memorable as the destination.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least half a day to drive the pass one-way (about 60 km from Haast to Makarora), factoring in stops at the main waterfalls and walks. If you're doing a round trip, plan a full day to allow for leisurely exploration. The road is narrow and winding — drive with care, especially in wet weather. Overnight in Haast or Wanaka to break the journey.
