The Gates of Haast is a dramatic river gorge where the Haast River thunders through a narrow chasm of ancient schist rock, just a short walk from the road. This is one of the most accessible and awe-inspiring stops on the drive between Wanaka and the West Coast, offering a raw glimpse into the power of New Zealand's wild nature.
Highlights & What to See
- The Gorge Viewpoint: A short, well-maintained track leads to a suspension bridge and lookout platforms that hang over the churning turquoise water. Feel the spray and roar as the river squeezes through the rock walls.
- Haast River: The milky-blue glacial water contrasts with the dark schist, especially after rain. Watch for kayakers attempting the challenging rapids.
- Native Rainforest Walk: The path to the gorge winds through dense podocarp forest, with silver ferns, mossy trunks, and birdsong. Keep an eye out for kererū (wood pigeon) and tūī.
- Interpretation Panels: Learn about the geology of the Haast Pass and the Māori history of the area as a greenstone (pounamu) trail.
- Nearby: Fantail Falls & Thunder Creek Falls: Both are short, easy walks off the Haast Highway, offering more waterfall and forest scenery.
- Haast Pass Summit: A few kilometres east, the pass marks the boundary between Otago and the West Coast, with views over the Southern Alps.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 20–30 minutes at the Gates of Haast itself, including the walk and time on the bridge. If you combine it with a stop at Fantail Falls (10 minutes) and Thunder Creek Falls (15 minutes), allow about 1–1.5 hours total. This is a perfect leg-stretcher on the 3-hour drive from Wanaka to Haast. Arrive early or late in the day to avoid tour bus crowds.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast: The small settlement of Haast is the gateway to the West Coast's wild beaches and the Jackson Bay fishing village. Stop for whitebait fritters or a coffee at the Haast Visitor Centre.
- Jackson Bay: A scenic 30-minute drive from Haast, this is the end of the road on the West Coast. Enjoy a fish-and-chip lunch overlooking the ocean and spot Hector's dolphins.
- Wanaka: Two hours east via the Haast Highway, Wanaka offers lakefront dining, hiking, and the famous Wanaka Tree. The drive over the pass is spectacular.
- Fox & Franz Josef Glaciers: Two hours north of Haast, these iconic glaciers offer guided walks and helicopter tours. Combine with a stop at Lake Matheson for mirror reflections.
- Blue Pools Walk: A short detour east of the Gates, this easy walk leads to crystal-clear pools perfect for a refreshing dip on a warm day.
