Straddling the Southern Alps in the South Island, Aspiring National Park is a wild, glacier-carved wonderland that feels like a backcountry dream. Named after the majestic Mount Aspiring / Tititea, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers some of New Zealand's most dramatic alpine scenery — think hanging valleys, turquoise rivers, and ancient beech forests. It's less crowded than Fiordland or Aoraki/Mount Cook, making it a haven for hikers and climbers seeking raw, untamed beauty.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

If you're short on time, a day trip from Wanaka or Makarora can cover a couple of short walks and scenic viewpoints. For a deeper experience, plan 2–3 days to tackle a longer hike like the Rob Roy Glacier or a section of the Gillespie Pass. Multi-day trampers should allow 4–5 days for a full circuit. The park is best visited from November to April, when the weather is milder and tracks are more accessible.
