Mount Aspiring Road is one of New Zealand's great alpine drives, a winding gravel ribbon that burrows deep into the heart of Mount Aspiring National Park. Starting near the tiny settlement of Jackson Bay, this road offers a raw, unfiltered immersion into the Southern Alps, with jaw-dropping views of hanging glaciers, beech forests, and the braided rivers that carve through the valleys. It's a journey for those who crave solitude and epic landscapes, far from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Drive to the Road End: The 40 km gravel road terminates at the Raspberry Creek car park, where the true wilderness begins. The drive itself is an attraction, with panoramic views of the Haast River valley and the snowy peaks of Mount Aspiring.
- Rob Roy Glacier Track: A moderate 3-hour return hike from the Raspberry Creek car park leads to a stunning viewpoint directly across from the Rob Roy Glacier. Watch avalanches tumble down the ice face and listen to the thunderous roar of icefalls.
- Blue Pools Walk: A short, easy walk near the start of the road leads to crystal-clear pools fed by glacial meltwater. On a sunny day, the water shimmers an impossible turquoise.
- Jackson Bay: At the road's western end, this tiny fishing settlement offers a slice of coastal life. Grab a coffee from the Jackson Bay Café and watch the waves roll in from the Tasman Sea.
- Haast Pass: While technically just beyond the road, the pass is the gateway to the West Coast and offers short walks to waterfalls like Fantail Falls and Thunder Creek Falls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day (6–8 hours) to drive the road and complete the Rob Roy Glacier Track. If you're short on time, a half-day allows for the drive and a short walk like the Blue Pools. The road is gravel and can be slow, especially after rain, so factor in extra time for photo stops and wildlife (look for kea and weka).
