Arthurs Pass is a rugged alpine village straddling the Southern Alps, where the air smells of beech forest and snowmelt. This is the gateway to the spectacular Arthur's Pass National Park, a realm of towering peaks, thundering waterfalls, and kea parrots that will steal your snacks—and your heart. The village itself is a tiny outpost with a handful of lodges and a general store, but the real draw is the raw, untamed wilderness that surrounds it.
Highlights & What to See
- Arthur's Pass National Park – New Zealand's third national park, offering world-class tramping (hiking) through alpine meadows, river valleys, and across the main divide.
- Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall – A short, steep walk leads to a viewing platform where a 131-metre cascade plunges into a rocky amphitheatre.
- Otira Viaduct Lookout – A dramatic viewpoint over the engineering marvel that clings to the sheer cliffside above the Otira Gorge.
- Kea spotting – These intelligent, cheeky alpine parrots are notorious for pecking at car windscreens and stealing unattended gear; keep your camera ready.
- Temple Basin Ski Area – A backcountry-style ski field accessible via a 4WD track and a 40-minute walk; summer offers superb ridge walks.
- Bealey Valley Track – A gentle riverside walk through ancient beech forest, perfect for a short leg-stretcher.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day here, driving the scenic Arthur's Pass Highway (SH73) and tackling one or two short walks like the Punchbowl or the Bealey Valley. If you're a keen tramper, plan for two to three days to explore longer routes such as the Avalanche Peak Track or the multi-day Mingha–Deception route. The village has basic accommodation, but book ahead in peak season.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Jackson Bay – A remote, windswept coastal settlement at the end of the Haast Highway, known for its whitebait fritters and wild beach.
- Hokitika – A quirky gold-rush town on the West Coast, famous for pounamu (greenstone) carving and the Hokitika Gorge's turquoise waters.
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers – Two of the world's most accessible glaciers, offering heli-hikes and ice climbing, about a 90-minute drive from Arthurs Pass.
- Castle Hill – An otherworldly landscape of limestone boulders that served as a filming location for The Chronicles of Narnia.
- Canterbury High Country – The eastern side of the pass leads to the braided rivers and tussock plains of the Canterbury region, ideal for a scenic drive onward to Christchurch.
