Welcome to Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, a realm of towering peaks, ancient glaciers, and star-filled skies that define New Zealand's Southern Alps. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to Aoraki/Mount Cook, the country's highest mountain at 3,724 meters, and offers some of the most dramatic alpine scenery on Earth. Whether you're an avid hiker, a stargazer, or simply seeking awe-inspiring landscapes, this park delivers an unforgettable encounter with raw nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Hooker Valley Track – An easy, well-maintained walk crossing swing bridges and ending at Hooker Glacier terminal lake, with sublime views of Mount Cook.
- Tasman Glacier & Tasman Lake – Hike to the viewpoint for a look at New Zealand's longest glacier and its iceberg-dotted lake; boat tours available.
- Kea Point Track – A short walk to a lookout over Mueller Glacier and the Sealy Tarns, perfect for sunrise or sunset.
- Stargazing at the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve – One of the world's best places for night-sky photography and stargazing, with the Mount Cook Village as your base.
- Sealy Tarns Track – A steep but rewarding climb to alpine tarns with mirror reflections of Mount Cook and the surrounding peaks.
- Glacier Explorers – Boat tours on Tasman Lake offer close-up views of icebergs and the terminal face of Tasman Glacier.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least one full day to experience the park's highlights, though two days allow for a longer hike or a stargazing session without rushing. The Hooker Valley Track alone takes 3–4 hours return, while the Sealy Tarns requires 4–5 hours. If you're short on time, combine the Hooker Valley and Kea Point walks for a half-day sampling of the best views.
