Huddled in the heart of Hokitika, the National Kiwi Centre offers a rare chance to meet New Zealand's most iconic bird up close. The dim, nocturnal house lets you watch kiwi foraging in near-darkness, their long bills probing the forest floor. Beyond the kiwi, you'll find tuatara (living fossils from the dinosaur era), giant eels that will eat from your hand, and a walk-through aviary with native birds. It's a compact but captivating experience, perfect for families and wildlife lovers.
Highlights & What to See
- Kiwi encounters: See North Island brown kiwi and great spotted kiwi in low-lit enclosures designed to mimic their natural habitat.
- Hand-feed giant eels: These monstrous longfin eels are decades old; you can feed them from a special platform – a thrilling, slightly slimy experience.
- Tuatara exhibit: Get face-to-face with New Zealand's ancient reptile, a species that has remained unchanged for 200 million years.
- Native bird aviary: Walk among tui, kererū, and fantails, and listen to their melodic calls.
- Kiwi talk and feeding: Check the daily schedule for keeper talks, where you'll learn about kiwi conservation and see the birds being fed.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–1.5 hours to fully experience the centre. The kiwi house is best visited first, as your eyes need a few minutes to adjust to the dark. Afterwards, spend time feeding the eels, watching the tuatara, and strolling the aviary. It's an ideal stop for a rainy day or a morning activity before exploring Hokitika's other attractions.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Lake Kaniere: A pristine lake surrounded by rainforest, perfect for kayaking, swimming, or a scenic picnic. The Dorothy Falls track is a quick detour.
- Shantytown Heritage Park: A living-history museum near Greymouth (30 minutes north) where you can pan for gold, ride a steam train, and explore a recreated gold-rush town.
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers: About 1.5–2 hours south, these massive glaciers offer heli-hikes and valley walks – a must-see for any West Coast itinerary.
