Tucked just off the main highway on the edge of Hokitika, Glow Worm Dell is a tiny, magical pocket of native bush that comes alive after dark. A short, easy boardwalk leads you into a damp, ferny grotto where thousands of glow worms twinkle like a subterranean starry sky. It’s a quick, free, and utterly enchanting stop that perfectly captures the West Coast’s wild, mysterious spirit.
Highlights & What to See
- Glow worm grotto: Follow the short loop boardwalk (less than 5 minutes) into a shaded dell where the walls and overhangs are studded with the blue-green lights of glow worms. Best viewed after dusk – bring a torch but use it sparingly so your eyes adjust.
- Night-time atmosphere: The dell is at its most magical when it’s fully dark and quiet. The only sounds are the trickle of water and the rustle of ferns, while the glow worms create a serene, otherworldly ambience.
- Easy access: Located right on State Highway 6, a few kilometres south of Hokitika town centre. There’s a small carpark and the boardwalk is flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for all ages and abilities.
- Free and self-guided: No ticket or guide needed – just turn up after sunset. The site is maintained by DOC and is a great example of the West Coast’s accessible natural wonders.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 20–30 minutes for the visit: 5–10 minutes to walk the boardwalk and soak in the glow worms, plus a little extra time to let your eyes adjust and spot the best clusters. It’s an ideal stop on a self-drive itinerary between Hokitika and Franz Josef – arrive just as dusk falls to see the glow worms at their brightest. If you’re staying in Hokitika, it’s a perfect after-dinner outing.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hokitika Gorge: About 30 minutes’ drive east, this stunning turquoise river gorge has a swingbridge and walking tracks – best visited in daylight before heading to the dell at dusk.
- Hokitika Town: Explore the town’s heritage buildings, pounamu (greenstone) galleries, and the wild beach with its driftwood sculptures. The Hokitika Museum and the nightly glow worm dell are a classic combo.
- Lake Kaniere: A beautiful lake with walking trails, picnic spots, and kayaking – just a 15-minute drive from town. Combine a lake afternoon with the glow worm dell in the evening.
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers: An hour’s drive south, these iconic glaciers offer heli-hikes and valley walks. The glow worm dell makes a great twilight stop on the drive back north.
