Hokitika Gorge Walkway is a short, family-friendly stroll through lush native forest to a jaw-dropping turquoise-blue river gorge. The vivid, milky colour of the water — caused by glacial flour suspended in the meltwater — is a photographer's dream. The walkway is well-maintained with boardwalks and a swing bridge that offers spectacular views up and down the gorge. It's a quintessential West Coast experience that packs a big visual punch for minimal effort.
Highlights & What to See
- Swing Bridge & Gorge Views: The highlight is the suspension bridge spanning the gorge; from its midpoint you get a panoramic view of the startlingly blue water framed by dense native bush.
- Turquoise Water: The surreal colour is best seen on a sunny day; the contrast between the bright blue water and the green foliage is unforgettable.
- Short & Easy Walk: The main loop is about 1.5 km return and takes 30–40 minutes, making it accessible for all fitness levels and families with young children.
- Picnic Spots: There are a few benches and flat areas near the car park where you can enjoy a snack surrounded by forest sounds.
- Interpretive Signs: Learn about the local geology, flora, and the significance of the area to Ngāi Tahu, the local iwi (tribe).
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 45 minutes to 1 hour at the walkway, including a leisurely walk and photo stops. It's an ideal quick detour if you're driving between Hokitika and Franz Josef or Fox Glacier. Pair it with a visit to the Hokitika Gorge itself (you can see the gorge from the walkway) or combine it with a stop at the nearby Hokitika Gorge Scenic Reserve.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Paparoa National Park: Home to the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, about an hour north of Hokitika — a must-see on the West Coast.
