Hokitika Gorge Scenic Reserve

Prepare for a visual shock: Hokitika Gorge is a slice of the Caribbean dropped into New Zealand's wild West Coast. The water here is an impossible, milky turquoise – the result of glacial flour suspended in the Hokitika River – set against a frame of dense native bush and granite boulders. A short, well-maintained walking track leads you to a swing bridge that offers the classic postcard view, but the gorge rewards those who linger: the colour shifts with the light, from deep jade to electric blue.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

You only need 30–45 minutes to walk the track and soak in the views, but budget an hour if you want to explore the riverbank or take lots of photos. The gorge is best as a quick stop on your way between Hokitika and Franz Josef – it's just 33 km from Hokitika town. Pair it with a swim at Lake Kaniere for a half-day trip.
