Whataroa is a tiny, off-the-beaten-path settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, cradled by lush native bush and the wild Tasman Sea. It's the gateway to the spectacular Ōkārito Lagoon and the only place in New Zealand where you can see the rare white heron (kōtuku) at its breeding colony. This is backcountry New Zealand at its most raw and serene — a place for birdwatchers, kayakers, and anyone craving solitude in a landscape that feels untouched.
Highlights & What to See
- White Heron Sanctuary Tours — a guided boat trip up the Ōkārito River to the only breeding colony of kōtuku in New Zealand, with sightings of royal spoonbills and little shags thrown in.
- Ōkārito Lagoon — a vast, unspoiled coastal lagoon perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, or peaceful walks along the shoreline; keep an eye out for black swans and white herons.
- Ōkārito Kiwi Sanctuary — a predator-fenced haven for the rare Okarito kiwi (rowi); book a guided night walk to hear their calls.
- Three Mile Pack Track — a short, scenic walk through coastal forest and wetlands to a secluded beach with driftwood and waves.
- Whataroa River — a braided river offering excellent jet-boat tours or simply a spot to cast a line for trout.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to take the white heron tour and explore the lagoon shore, but if you want to kayak or do a kiwi walk, plan for a full day. Most visitors pass through on the drive between Franz Josef and Hokitika, but staying overnight in one of the few lodges lets you soak up the quiet after the tour boats leave.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef / Waiau — 30 minutes south, with the famous Franz Josef Glacier and hot pools.
- Fox Glacier — another 20 minutes south, offering glacier walks and Lake Matheson.
- Hokitika — 90 minutes north, a vibrant town with pounamu (greenstone) carving, a wild beach, and sunset views.
- Ōkārito — the tiny village on the lagoon itself, with a café, kayak hire, and a DOC campsite.
- Lake Moeraki — a serene lake and wilderness lodge south of Fox Glacier, good for kayaking and glowworm spotting.
