Whataroa

Whataroa is a tiny, off-the-beaten-path settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, cradled by lush native bush and the wild Tasman Sea. It's the gateway to the spectacular Ōkārito Lagoon and the only place in New Zealand where you can see the rare white heron (kōtuku) at its breeding colony. This is backcountry New Zealand at its most raw and serene — a place for birdwatchers, kayakers, and anyone craving solitude in a landscape that feels untouched.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is enough to take the white heron tour and explore the lagoon shore, but if you want to kayak or do a kiwi walk, plan for a full day. Most visitors pass through on the drive between Franz Josef and Hokitika, but staying overnight in one of the few lodges lets you soak up the quiet after the tour boats leave.
