Stretching 132 km from Greymouth to Ross, the West Coast Wilderness Trail is a world-class cycle trail that takes you deep into the untamed heart of New Zealand's West Coast. Following historic railway lines, gold-mining water races, and wild river valleys, this mostly off-road trail is a journey through lush rainforest, past glacier-fed lakes, and along the dramatic Tasman Sea coastline. The trail is well-graded and suitable for most fitness levels, with plenty of charming towns and historic sites to explore along the way.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most riders take 3–4 days to complete the full trail, allowing time for side trips and enjoying the towns. If you're short on time, the most scenic section is from Hokitika to Ross (about 4 hours). The trail is rideable year-round, though spring and autumn offer the best weather. Allow a full day for the Greymouth to Hokitika leg, and another for Hokitika to Ross. E-bikes are available for hire in Greymouth and Hokitika.
