Stretching 132 km from Greymouth to Ross, the West Coast Wilderness Trail is a world-class cycle trail that takes you deep into the untamed heart of New Zealand's West Coast. Following historic railway lines, gold-mining water races, and wild river valleys, this mostly off-road trail is a journey through lush rainforest, past glacier-fed lakes, and along the dramatic Tasman Sea coastline. The trail is well-graded and suitable for most fitness levels, with plenty of charming towns and historic sites to explore along the way.
Highlights & What to See
- Greymouth to Kumara: Ride through native podocarp forest and along the Taramakau River, with a stop at the historic Brunner Mine site.

- Milltown to Hokitika: Cruise along the Hokitika River gorge and past Lake Kaniere, with a detour to the Dorothy Falls.
- Hokitika to Ross: Wind through coastal forest and past the historic gold-mining town of Ross, where you can try your hand at gold panning.

Suggested Time to Spend

The trail is rideable year-round, though spring and autumn offer the best weather. Allow a full day for the Greymouth to Hokitika leg, and another for Hokitika to Ross. E-bikes are available for hire in Greymouth and Hokitika.
