Waiho Hot Springs
Hidden in the dense rainforest of Westland Tai Poutini National Park, Waiho Hot Springs offers a truly unique soak: geothermal pools fed by natural mineral springs, set against a backdrop of misty mountains and ancient podocarp forest. The water is rich in silica and minerals, and the open-air pools — surrounded by ferns and native trees — create a serene, almost primal experience. After a day of exploring glaciers or tramping, sinking into these warm, soothing waters is the perfect way to unwind.
Highlights & What to See
- Natural Hot Pools: Two large, rock-lined pools with temperatures ranging from warm to hot, surrounded by native bush. The mineral-rich water is said to have therapeutic properties.
- Glacier Views: On clear days, you can see the Franz Josef Glacier peeking through the treetops — a stunning contrast of ice and steam.
- Rainforest Setting: The pools are nestled in a clearing of lush West Coast rainforest; listen for native birds like the bellbird and fantail.
- Night Soaking: Visit after dark when the pools are lit by soft lamps and the stars shine through the canopy — a magical experience.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours to fully relax and enjoy the pools. The hot springs are open daily from late morning until evening, so you can easily fit a soak into a day spent exploring Franz Josef or Fox Glacier. To avoid crowds, aim for late afternoon or early evening. If you're short on time, even a 30-minute dip is refreshing.
