The Divide is the highest point on the Haast Pass Highway, straddling the boundary between the West Coast and Otago regions. At 562 metres above sea level, this alpine pass marks the watershed where rivers flow west to the Tasman Sea and east to the Pacific. For road-trippers, it's a dramatic moment of transition: one side is cloaked in dense temperate rainforest, the other opens into the stark, glacier-carved landscapes of Mount Aspiring National Park. The air is crisp, the views are immense, and the sense of crossing a natural frontier is palpable.
Highlights & What to See
- Watershed Viewpoint: A short boardwalk leads to a viewing platform where you can see the headwaters of the Makarora River (east) and the Haast River (west). Interpretive signs explain the unique ecology of the divide.
- Alpine Nature Walk: A 20-minute loop trail through subalpine shrubland, with interpretive panels about the local flora and geology. Look for mountain daisies, snow totara, and kea – cheeky alpine parrots that might investigate your car.
- Haast Pass Lookout: A few kilometres south of the divide, a short walk rewards with panoramic views of the Haast River valley and the surrounding peaks.
- Gates of Haast: Further west, the Haast River squeezes through a narrow gorge, creating a series of spectacular rapids and waterfalls visible from the highway.
- Fantail Falls & Thunder Creek Falls: Two easily accessible waterfalls along the Haast Pass Highway, both within a short walk from the road. Perfect for a leg-stretching photo stop.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pause at The Divide for 20–30 minutes – enough to walk the boardwalk, snap photos, and absorb the atmosphere. If you're keen to stretch your legs, factor in an extra 45 minutes for the Alpine Nature Walk. The divide is best appreciated as a midway stop on the drive between Wanaka and Haast (about 1.5 hours each way). Aim to arrive in the late morning or early afternoon for the best light and to avoid afternoon cloud build-up.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wanaka: A vibrant lakeside town 90 minutes east, with excellent cafés, the famous Wanaka Tree, and access to Mount Aspiring National Park.
- Haast: The small settlement 45 minutes west, gateway to the West Coast's wild beaches, Jackson Bay, and the Haast River Safari tours.
- Mount Aspiring National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage site offering world-class hiking, including the Rob Roy Glacier Track and the Blue Pools Track.
- Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers: Further north on the West Coast, these iconic glaciers are a 2–3 hour drive from Haast. Combine with a stop at the coastal lagoons and pancake rocks at Punakaiki.
