Rob Roy Glacier is a dramatic hanging glacier in Mount Aspiring National Park, accessible via a rewarding day hike that offers close-up views of cascading ice and towering rock walls. The track winds through lush beech forest and across swing bridges before opening to a stunning viewpoint where you can watch avalanches thunder down the glacier face. This is one of the best short walks in the Wanaka area for experiencing raw alpine power without a multi-day trek.
Highlights & What to See
- Rob Roy Glacier Lookout: The main viewpoint offers a front-row seat to the glacier's seracs and icefalls, with frequent small avalanches in warmer months.
- Beech Forest Walk: The lower section of the track passes through ancient red and silver beech trees, alive with birdlife like fantails and tomtits.
- Swing Bridges: Two suspension bridges cross the Rob Roy Stream, adding a touch of adventure and great photo opportunities.
- Alpine Meadows: In summer, the upper track is lined with wildflowers, including Mount Cook buttercups and alpine daisies.
- Waterfall Views: The stream itself is fed by the glacier, and you'll pass several smaller cascades along the way.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full half-day for the return hike: 3–4 hours walking time plus time at the lookout. The track is 10 km return with 500 m elevation gain, so it's a steady climb but not overly strenuous. Start early to avoid afternoon cloud that can obscure the glacier, especially in spring and autumn. If you're based in Wanaka, plan for a 4–5 hour round trip including driving time to the trailhead (30 minutes from Wanaka).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wanaka: The closest town, with lakeside dining, the famous Wanaka Tree, and Puzzling World.
- Mount Aspiring National Park: Explore other short walks like the Blue Pools or the more challenging Cascade Saddle.
- Haast Pass: Drive the scenic highway to see Fantail Falls, Thunder Creek Falls, and the Gates of Haast.
- Lake Hawea: A quieter alternative to Wanaka, perfect for kayaking or a scenic picnic.
- Glacier Country (Fox & Franz Josef): A longer drive but worth combining for a full West Coast glacier experience.
