Okuru Lagoon is a serene, off-the-beaten-path gem on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the Haast River meets the Tasman Sea. This shallow, tidal lagoon is a haven for birdlife and offers a peaceful escape from the more frequented stops along the Haast Highway. With its mirrored waters reflecting the surrounding rainforest and distant mountains, it's a photographer's dream and a perfect spot for a quiet picnic or a short walk. The lagoon is also a significant site for local Māori, who have traditionally harvested food here.
Highlights & What to See
- Birdwatching Paradise: Spot royal spoonbills, white herons (kōtuku), and various waders feeding along the lagoon's edges.
- Okuru Walking Track: A short, easy loop through coastal forest and along the lagoon's shore, offering stunning views and interpretation panels about the area's natural and cultural history.
- Sunset Views: The lagoon faces west, making it an ideal spot to watch the sun sink into the Tasman Sea, with the Southern Alps as a backdrop.
- Fishing and Kayaking: The calm waters are popular for kayaking and fishing (whitebait season in spring is particularly notable).
- Nearby Haast Visitor Centre: Just a short drive away, this centre provides excellent context on the region's geology, wildlife, and human history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30 minutes to an hour at Okuru Lagoon, which is perfect for a short walk and some birdwatching. If you're keen on kayaking or fishing, allow 2-3 hours. The lagoon is a great stop on a self-drive itinerary between Haast and Fox Glacier, breaking up the drive with a dose of nature.
