Okuru Lagoon is a serene, off-the-beaten-path gem on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the Haast River meets the Tasman Sea. This shallow, tidal lagoon is a haven for birdlife and offers a peaceful escape from the more frequented stops along the Haast Highway. With its mirrored waters reflecting the surrounding rainforest and distant mountains, it's a photographer's dream and a perfect spot for a quiet picnic or a short walk. The lagoon is also a significant site for local Māori, who have traditionally harvested food here.
