Munro Beach Track
Munro Beach Track is a short but rewarding walk through lush coastal forest on the wild West Coast, leading to a secluded black-sand beach where you might spot the rare Fiordland crested penguin. The track offers a genuine slice of untouched New Zealand, with the roar of the Tasman Sea never far away.
Highlights & What to See
- Fiordland crested penguins: The main draw – from July to March, these endangered penguins come ashore to nest. Keep your distance and use the viewing hide.
- Coastal forest walk: A 20-minute stroll through dense nikau palms, ferns, and rata trees, with interpretive signs about the local ecology.
- Munro Beach itself: A wild, windswept stretch of black sand with dramatic driftwood and crashing waves – perfect for a quiet picnic or photography.
- Seal viewing: New Zealand fur seals often haul out on the rocks at the southern end of the beach.
- Lake Moeraki: Just a few minutes' drive north, this serene lake is part of the same coastal ecosystem and offers short walks and birdlife.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours for the return walk and time on the beach. The track is short (1.5 km return) and easy, so you can easily fit it into a half-day detour while driving the Haast Highway. Combine with a stop at nearby Knight's Point Lookout or the Monro Beach Walk for a full morning of coastal exploration.
