Mount Aspiring National Park is a rugged wilderness of glaciated valleys, alpine peaks, and ancient beech forests, centred on the iconic 3033-metre Mount Aspiring/Tititea. Part of Te Wāhipounamu – a UNESCO World Heritage site – this park offers some of New Zealand's most dramatic and less-trodden landscapes, perfect for adventurous travellers seeking solitude and raw natural beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Aspiring/Tititea – New Zealand's highest peak outside Aoraki/Mount Cook, a striking pyramidal summit visible from many trails and viewpoints.
- Rob Roy Glacier Track – A rewarding day walk from Wanaka that brings you face-to-face with the glacier's terminal face and cascading waterfalls.
- Matukituki Valley – The main access route into the park, with braided rivers, tussock flats, and classic alpine scenery; ideal for tramping and camping.
- Gillespie Pass Circuit – A challenging multi-day tramp through the Young, Wilkin, and Makarora Valleys, offering remote huts and stunning mountain vistas.
- Blue Pools Track – An easy walk to crystal-clear pools on the Makarora River, where the water shimmers in iridescent shades of blue.
- Haast Pass Highway – The scenic road that skirts the park's northern edge, punctuated by waterfalls, short walks, and picnic spots like Thunder Creek Falls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least two to three days to appreciate the park properly. Day-trippers can do the Rob Roy Glacier walk or a short stop at the Blue Pools, but to experience the backcountry – like the Gillespie Pass or French Ridge Hut – plan for three to five nights. The best months are November to April, when snow is less of a factor on higher trails.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wanaka – The lakeside town is the main gateway to the park, with excellent dining, accommodation, and activities like lake cruises and mountain biking.
- Haast – A small settlement on the West Coast, offering access to the park's northern edge and the dramatic Haast River.
- Jackson Bay – A remote coastal settlement with a historic wharf and the famous Craypot restaurant – perfect for a seafood feast after tramping.
- Westland Tai Poutini National Park – Home to Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, easily combined on a road trip along the Haast Highway.
