Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson, just a short drive from Fox Glacier, is New Zealand's most photogenic mirror lake. On a calm morning, its dark, tannin-stained waters perfectly reflect Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, creating a scene so symmetrical it barely looks real. The easy loop track through ancient rimu and kahikatea forest is a must for any West Coast itinerary.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–1.5 hours for the full loop walk and photo stops. If you're keen on sunrise photography, arrive 30 minutes before dawn—the walk is easy in the dark with a torch. Combine this with a morning visit to Fox Glacier or a drive to Gillespies Beach for a half-day exploration.
