Lake Matheson, on the West Coast near Fox Glacier, is famous for its mirror-like reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. The dark, tannin-stained waters create perfect mirrored images on calm days, making it one of New Zealand's most photographed lakes. A well-maintained walking track circles the lake through ancient rimu and kahikatea forest, offering a serene escape.
Highlights & What to See
- Mirror Lake Reflections: Arrive early morning or late afternoon for the best mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, especially from the View of Views jetty.
- Lake Matheson Loop Track: An easy 2.6 km walk (about 1.5 hours) through native forest, with several viewing platforms. The track is flat and suitable for most fitness levels.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for native birds like the weka, fantail, and kererū (wood pigeon). You might also see eels in the lake.
- Matheson Café: Stop for a coffee or meal with panoramic views of the lake and mountains. Their homemade pies and cakes are a treat.
- Sunrise and Sunset: The lake is particularly stunning at sunrise when the mountains catch the first light, and at sunset when the sky turns pink.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the loop walk, including time to sit and admire the views. If you're keen on photography, plan to spend an extra hour for the best light. The lake is easily combined with a visit to Fox Glacier or Franz Josef Glacier in a day trip from Fox Glacier township (just 5 km away).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier: A 5-minute drive from the lake, Fox Glacier township offers accommodation, dining, and access to glacier walks and heli-hikes.
- Franz Josef Glacier: 23 km north, larger glacier township with hot pools, guided ice hikes, and helicopter tours.
- Gillespies Beach: A wild black-sand beach 20 km west, great for seal colonies and coastal walks.
- Ship Creek: 30 km south, a short boardwalk trail through dune forest to a remote beach – a peaceful stop on the Haast Highway.
- Haast Pass: 70 km south, a scenic mountain pass with waterfalls, short walks, and historic bridges on the way to Wanaka.
