Key Summit Track

Perched above the Hollyford Valley in Fiordland National Park, the Key Summit Track offers one of New Zealand's most rewarding half-day walks. This alpine boardwalk climbs through ancient beech forest to a 360-degree viewpoint over the Darran Mountains and the Humboldt Range. The summit's tussock-covered plateau feels like a slice of the Routeburn Track without the multi-day commitment. It's a must-do for anyone driving the Milford Road and craving a taste of the Southern Alps' raw, wind-scoured beauty.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 3-4 hours return for the full experience, including time to walk the summit loop and soak in the views. The track starts from the Divide Shelter on the Milford Road (SH 94), about 85 km from Te Anau. It's a steady climb of about 400 metres elevation gain, suitable for most fitness levels. Go early to avoid afternoon winds and crowds. If you're short on time, you can still appreciate the lower forest section in an hour.
