Hokitika Gorge is a dazzling slice of West Coast wilderness where the Hokitika River has carved a narrow canyon through ancient granite, creating a series of turquoise pools that seem almost impossibly vivid. The water's surreal milky-blue hue comes from glacial flour suspended in the meltwater, and on a sunny day the contrast with the dense native bush and grey rock faces is nothing short of breathtaking. A short, well-maintained walking track leads you across a swingbridge and along the gorge rim, offering multiple viewpoints that get progressively more dramatic as you go deeper into the canyon. This is one of the most accessible and photogenic natural wonders on the West Coast, yet it never feels crowded—a perfect half-day detour when driving between Hokitika and Franz Josef.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 45 minutes to 1.5 hours for the return walk, including time to linger at the viewpoints and take photos. The track is an easy 1.5 km round trip with gentle gradients, suitable for most fitness levels. If you're self-driving the West Coast, this makes a perfect 1–2 hour stop en route between Hokitika (30 minutes north) and Franz Josef (1 hour south). To make the most of the light, visit in the late morning or early afternoon when the sun is high enough to illuminate the gorge's depths.
