Perched at the crest of the Southern Alps, Haast Pass Lookout offers one of New Zealand's most dramatic mountain vistas without requiring a single step of hiking. As you emerge from the dense West Coast rainforest, the road swings around a sharp corner and suddenly the vast, glacially carved valleys of Mount Aspiring National Park unfold before you. This is a classic South Island road-trip moment: wind-battered, awe-inspiring, and utterly wild. The lookout is a must-stop on the drive between the West Coast and Wanaka, providing a glimpse into the raw beauty of the alps that defines this part of the country.
Highlights & What to See
- Panoramic Alpine Views: Gaze across the Haast River valley to the snowcapped peaks of the Southern Alps, including Mount Aspiring/Tititea on a clear day.
- Roadside Stop: The lookout is easily accessible right off State Highway 6, with a small parking area and viewing platform – perfect for a quick photo op.
- Interpretive Panels: Learn about the geology and Māori history of the Haast Pass, a traditional route used by Māori pounamu (greenstone) traders.
- Nearby Short Walks: Combine with the short Fantail Falls walk (5 minutes) or Thunder Creek Falls (10 minutes) for waterfall views just minutes off the highway.
- Seal Colony at Knights Point: On the West Coast side, stop at Knights Point lookout for fur seals basking on the rocks (seasonal).
Suggested Time to Spend
This is a 10–15 minute stop – long enough to soak in the view, snap photos, and read the information panels. It works perfectly as a brief leg-stretch and scenic break on the 2.5-hour drive between Haast and Wanaka. If you're in no rush, allow an extra half-hour to walk to Fantail Falls or Thunder Creek Falls, both just a few minutes' drive south on the Haast Pass.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast: The small township 30 minutes north offers the Haast Visitor Centre and access to Jackson Bay, a wild coastal settlement with a fish-and-chip shop serving local blue cod.
- Wanaka: A 1.5-hour drive east over the pass leads to the lakeside town of Wanaka, with its famous #ThatWanakaTree and excellent hiking and dining.
- Makawhio River / Jacobs River: Along the Haast Highway, look for the Makawhio River bridge – a great spot for a picnic with mountain views.
- Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers: About 1.5 hours north of Haast, these iconic glaciers offer heli-hikes and valley walks.
