The Gates of Haast is a dramatic river gorge where the Haast River squeezes through a narrow, rocky cleft, creating a series of powerful rapids and thundering waterfalls. This wild, untamed stretch of water is one of the most spectacular sights on the West Coast, easily accessible from the road but feeling utterly remote. The air is filled with the roar of water and the scent of damp rock and native bush.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

You can easily spend 1–2 hours exploring the main viewpoints and short walks. If you want to do all the waterfall walks and the river valley trail, budget half a day. The best time to visit is morning or late afternoon when the light is softer and the crowds thinner. The gorge is dramatic in any weather, but after heavy rain the river is at its most powerful.
