The Gates of Haast is a dramatic river gorge where the Haast River squeezes through a narrow, rocky cleft, creating a series of powerful rapids and thundering waterfalls. This wild, untamed stretch of water is one of the most spectacular sights on the West Coast, easily accessible from the road but feeling utterly remote. The air is filled with the roar of water and the scent of damp rock and native bush.
Highlights & What to See
- Gates of Haast Bridge Lookout: Stand on the bridge and watch the river surge through the narrow gorge – a truly powerful sight, especially after rain.
- Thunder Creek Falls: A short walk leads to a 28m waterfall that cascades into the Haast River; the spray and roar are unforgettable.
- Fantail Falls: A delicate, fan-shaped waterfall tumbling over schist rock, easily viewed from a short track off the highway.
- Roaring Billy Falls: A 30m waterfall that lives up to its name, especially in spring melt; a 15-minute walk through lush podocarp forest leads to a viewing platform.
- Haast River Valley Walk: A gentle 3km return walk through ancient forest along the river, offering peaceful views and birdlife.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily spend 1–2 hours exploring the main viewpoints and short walks. If you want to do all the waterfall walks and the river valley trail, budget half a day. The best time to visit is morning or late afternoon when the light is softer and the crowds thinner. The gorge is dramatic in any weather, but after heavy rain the river is at its most powerful.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast Township: A small settlement with a visitor centre, café and petrol station – a good base for the area.
- Jackson Bay: A scenic coastal drive ending at a remote fishing village with a café and wild beach.
- Haast Beach: A long, windswept beach with dunes and views of the Southern Alps – great for a bracing walk.
- Ship Creek: A short walk through kahikatea swamp forest to a wild beach, famous for its dramatic driftwood.
- Knight's Lookout: A viewpoint offering panoramic views of the Haast River valley and mountain ranges – just a short detour.
