Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic glaciers, plunging from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest just 300 metres above sea level. The glacier's dynamic ice face and the surrounding Te Wāhipounamu World Heritage Area offer a raw, ever-changing landscape that feels both ancient and alive. Whether you're hiking to the terminal face or taking a heli-hike onto the ice, this place delivers an unforgettable encounter with nature's power.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a full day to experience the glacier properly: a morning walk to the terminal face (1.5–2 hours) and an afternoon heli-hike (3–4 hours including flight). If you're short on time, the terminal walk alone can be done in a couple of hours. For a more relaxed pace, stay overnight in Franz Josef village and add a second day for longer hikes or the hot pools.
