Straddling the spine of the Southern Alps, Aspiring National Park is a raw, majestic wilderness of glacier-carved valleys, alpine lakes, and the iconic Mount Aspiring (3,033 m). This UNESCO World Heritage area offers some of New Zealand’s most dramatic landscapes, with fewer crowds than its northern neighbor, Fiordland. Whether you’re a seasoned tramper or a day-hiker, the park’s trails lead you through beech forests, across swing bridges, and to viewpoints that will leave you breathless.
Highlights & What to See
- Rob Roy Glacier Track: A rewarding day walk from Wanaka with views of a hanging glacier and cascading waterfalls.
- Routeburn Track: One of New Zealand’s Great Walks, linking Aspiring with Fiordland National Park through alpine meadows and mountain passes.
- Mount Aspiring (Tititea): A challenging climb for experienced mountaineers, offering stunning summit views.
- Matukituki Valley: A scenic drive and base for tramping, with swing bridges and braided rivers.
- Blue Pools: Crystal-clear waters with a short walk through native forest, perfect for a refreshing dip.
- Haast Pass: The gateway from the West Coast, with waterfalls and short walks like Thunder Creek Falls.
Suggested Time to Spend
With at least 2–3 days you can explore the park’s highlights. Dedicate one day to the Rob Roy Glacier walk (4–5 hours return) and another to a section of the Routeburn Track or a drive along Haast Pass with short walks. For multi-day trampers, the Routeburn takes 2–3 days one-way. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Wanaka or Haast can still include a couple of short walks and viewpoints.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
