Arthur's Pass National Park is a rugged alpine wilderness straddling the Southern Alps, where beech forests, tussock-covered valleys, and dramatic peaks create a playground for hikers and nature lovers. The park's namesake mountain pass was forged by Māori pounamu trails and later by European road builders, and today the TranzAlpine train snakes through its heart. The air is crisp, the rivers are glacier-fed, and the kea (mountain parrots) are cheeky locals.
Highlights & What to See
- Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall: A short, steep walk leads to a 131-metre cascade thundering into a rocky amphitheatre—best after rain.
- Temple Basin Ski Area: A backcountry ski and snowboard spot with a historic lodge, accessible via a steep 4WD track and a 45-minute walk (winter only).
- Bealey Valley Track: A gentle walk through ancient beech forest to a swingbridge over the roaring Waimakariri River, perfect for spotting kea and riflemen.
- Arthur's Pass Village: The park's tiny hub has a DOC visitor centre, a general store, and a railway station where the TranzAlpine stops—worth a pause for a coffee and a chat with locals.
- Avalanche Peak: A challenging day hike (6–8 hours return) with exposed ridges and 360-degree views of the Southern Alps—for experienced trampers only.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a day driving through the pass, but to truly experience the park, dedicate one full day for a short walk and a scenic train ride, or two days to tackle a longer hike like Avalanche Peak. If you're a keen tramper, budget three days to explore the network of backcountry huts and tracks.
