Arthur's Pass National Park is a rugged alpine wilderness straddling the Southern Alps, where beech forests, tussock-covered valleys, and dramatic peaks create a playground for hikers and nature lovers. The park's namesake mountain pass was forged by Māori pounamu trails and later by European road builders, and today the TranzAlpine train snakes through its heart. The air is crisp, the rivers are glacier-fed, and the kea (mountain parrots) are cheeky locals.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend a day driving through the pass, but to truly experience the park, dedicate one full day for a short walk and a scenic train ride, or two days to tackle a longer hike like Avalanche Peak. If you're a keen tramper, budget three days to explore the network of backcountry huts and tracks.
