Rising like a titan above the Southern Alps, Aoraki Mount Cook is New Zealand’s highest peak and the heart of a world-class alpine playground. The air here is crisp, the light ever-changing, and the scale humbling. Whether you're a seasoned mountaineer or a casual day-walker, this is a place where the mountains command your full attention.
Highlights & What to See
- Hooker Valley Track: The most accessible and rewarding walk, with swing bridges, alpine tarns, and close-up views of the glacier-carved valley. Allow 3 hours return.
- Tasman Glacier & Tasman Lake: Take the short walk to the glacier lookout, or kayak among icebergs in the lake for a surreal experience.
- Aoraki Mount Cook Village: A small settlement with a visitor centre, the historic Hermitage Hotel, and a few cafés – a perfect base for your explorations.
- Stargazing: Part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, the night sky here is ridiculously clear. Join a guided tour or simply look up.
- Scenic flights: For the ultimate perspective, a helicopter or plane flight over the glaciers and peaks is unforgettable (weather permitting).
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least one full day to do the Hooker Valley Track and explore the glacier viewpoints. If you want to attempt a longer hike like the Mueller Hut Route or take a scenic flight, add another day. Two days is ideal to soak in the atmosphere and catch a sunrise or sunset on the peaks.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
