Pancake Rocks at Dolomite Point near Punakaiki are one of the West Coast's most surreal natural wonders. These ancient limestone formations, layered like a stack of hotcakes, were shaped over 30 million years by marine life and seismic activity. At high tide, the blowholes erupt with dramatic force, sending plumes of spray skyward through the rocks. The short, family-friendly loop walk offers jaw-dropping viewpoints that make this a must-stop on any South Island road trip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes on the Pancake Rocks loop, including photo stops and watching the blowholes. If you add the Punakaiki Cavern or a short rainforest walk, allow 1.5–2 hours. For a deeper experience, combine it with a longer hike along the Pororari River or a picnic on the beach. The site is an easy stop-off between Greymouth (40 km south) and Westport (50 km north), so it fits neatly into a day's driving schedule.
