Charleston is a tiny, historic gold-mining settlement on the West Coast, wrapped in lush native rainforest and edged by wild Tasman Sea beaches. Founded after the 1867 gold rush, it once boasted 2,500 residents and 27 hotels; today it offers a quiet, off-the-beaten-path escape with easy access to the renowned Paparoa National Park, limestone karst landscapes, and the pancake rocks of Punakaiki. The atmosphere is laid-back and rich in pioneer stories, with friendly locals always ready to share a yarn.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Charleston itself can be explored in a couple of hours, but to truly appreciate the surrounding Paparoa National Park and Punakaiki, plan for at least one full day. For a relaxed pace, stay overnight in one of the local lodges or campgrounds, allowing time for a night tour and a morning walk along the Pororari River. If you’re driving the West Coast, it works well as a short stop between Greymouth (30 minutes south) and Westport (40 minutes north).
