Westland Tai Poutini National Park is a realm of dramatic contrasts, where the ancient glaciers of the Southern Alps plunge into lush temperate rainforest. Carved by ice and rain, this World Heritage Area offers a raw, untamed beauty that feels like stepping into a prehistoric world. The park's centerpiece is the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, two of the most accessible glaciers on Earth, but its wonders extend far beyond the ice.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier – Walk to the glacier's terminal face or take a heli-hike onto the ice. The valley's sheer walls and thundering icefalls are unforgettable.
- Fox Glacier – Slightly smaller but equally impressive, with a quieter atmosphere. The walk to Lake Matheson offers mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook.
- Lake Matheson – Famous for its perfect reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Best visited at dawn or dusk.
- Okarito Lagoon – A pristine wetland sanctuary for birdlife. Kayak or take a boat tour to spot white herons (kotuku) and royal spoonbills.
- Gillespies Beach – A wild black-sand beach with a historic gold-mining settlement. Seal colonies and dramatic coastal views await.
- Copland Track & Welcome Flat Hot Pools – A challenging multi-day hike leads to natural hot pools nestled in the forest, a sublime reward after a day's tramp.
- Glacier Viewing Walks – Several short walks (e.g., Sentinel Rock, Peters Pool) offer stunning glacier views without the need for a guide.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend two to three days exploring the park's highlights. This allows a full day for a glacier hike (heli-hike or valley walk), a morning at Lake Matheson, and an afternoon exploring Okarito or Gillespies Beach. If you're a keen tramper, add an extra day for the Copland Track or a longer backcountry adventure. The park is compact, so you can easily base yourself in Franz Josef or Fox Glacier townships and self-drive between attractions.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Haast Pass – A scenic drive south through ancient rainforest, waterfalls, and mountain vistas, connecting to Wanaka and Queenstown.
- Hokitika – A charming coastal town known for its pounamu (greenstone) carving, wild beaches, and the Hokitika Gorge.
- Punakaiki & the Pancake Rocks – North of the park, these limestone formations and blowholes are a must-see on the way to or from Greymouth.
- Arthur's Pass National Park – A mountainous crossing with alpine walks, kea parrots, and dramatic viaducts, linking the West Coast to Canterbury.
