Punakaiki Pancake Rocks

Punakaiki is one of those rare places where geology puts on a show that feels almost theatrical. The Pancake Rocks, layered limestone formations that look like stacks of thick, weathered pancakes, rise dramatically from the Tasman Sea. At high tide, seawater surges through blowholes, sending plumes of spray into the air with a thunderous roar. This is a short, easy stop on the West Coast road trip, but it’s the kind of place that lingers in your memory long after you’ve left the coast behind.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes on the Pancake Rocks loop, but to fully appreciate the area, allow 1–2 hours. If you plan to do the Pororari River Track or explore the cavern, budget half a day. Punakaiki works best as a quick stop between Greymouth and Westport, or as a lunch break on a West Coast road trip.
