Lake Matheson

Lake Matheson, nestled near the small settlement of Fox Glacier, is one of New Zealand's most iconic mirror lakes. On a calm day, the still, dark waters reflect the towering peaks of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman with breathtaking clarity. The lake was formed some 14,000 years ago as the Fox Glacier retreated, leaving a depression that filled with water. Its distinctive dark colour comes from organic matter leaching from the surrounding native forest. A visit here is a quintessential West Coast experience, offering a serene contrast to the rugged glacier landscapes nearby.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours to complete the loop walk at a leisurely pace, including time to sit at the viewing platforms. Many visitors combine Lake Matheson with a morning glacier activity or a drive to the Fox Glacier car park. For photographers, an early start (before sunrise) is highly recommended to capture the best reflections and soft morning light. The lake is accessible year-round, but the walk can be muddy after rain – sturdy shoes are advised.
