Karamea is a remote, unspoiled gem at the northern end of the West Coast, where the wild Tasman Sea meets ancient rainforest and limestone karst landscapes. This tiny settlement is the gateway to the extraordinary Ōpārara Basin and the Heaphy Track, offering a true off-the-beaten-path experience for adventurous travellers. Expect quiet rivers, glowworm-lit caves, and a palpable sense of isolation that feels a world away from the tourist crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Ōpārara Basin – A surreal landscape of limestone arches, towering bluffs, and the famous Moria Gate Arch. Walk the short Ōpārara Arch track or the longer loop to Mirror Tarn and the Box Canyon.
- Ōpārara Arches – Two massive natural limestone bridges carved by the Ōpārara River; the main arch is one of the largest in New Zealand.
- Morine Cave – A wild limestone cave with glowworms and delicate formations; bring a torch and sturdy shoes for a self-guided adventure.
- Heaphy Track – One of New Zealand's Great Walks, starting from Kohaihai at the northern end of Karamea. Even a day walk to the beach is rewarding, but trampers can tackle the full 78 km multi-day route.
- Karamea Estuary – A peaceful spot for birdwatching (white herons, royal spoonbills) and kayaking at high tide.
- Kahurangi National Park – The park surrounds Karamea, offering countless trails, from short nature walks to backcountry tramps.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two full days to explore the Ōpārara Basin and take a short walk on the Heaphy Track. If you're a keen tramper, add another 2–3 days to complete the Heaphy or explore deeper into Kahurangi. Most visitors arrive by car (2.5 hours from Westport) and treat Karamea as a tranquil end-of-road destination – it's worth the drive.
