Haast is a tiny settlement at the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Te Wāhipounamu wilderness, where the Haast River meets the Tasman Sea. This remote outpost on the West Coast is the launching pad for exploring untamed rainforests, roaring waterfalls, and the dramatic Haast Pass – one of New Zealand’s most scenic alpine roads. With a palpable sense of isolation and a fierce, moody beauty, Haast feels like the edge of the world.
Highlights & What to See
- Haast Pass – Drive this legendary route through beech forest and past blue pools, swing bridges, and cascading waterfalls like Thunder Creek Falls and Fantail Falls.
- Ship Creek – A short walk through kahikatea swamp forest leads to a wild surf beach; keep an eye out for sea lions and the historic Haast to Paringa Cattle Track.
- Monro Beach Walk – A gentle forest trail to a remote beach where Fiordland crested penguins come ashore to nest (July–November).
- Jackson Bay – The southernmost point of the West Coast road, offering sweeping views of the Southern Alps and a chance to sample local whitebait fritters at the Craypot restaurant.
- Haast River Safari – Jet boat tours that zip up the braided Haast River into the mountains, combining adrenaline with jaw-dropping scenery.
- Haast Visitor Centre – A small but excellent museum on Māori history, European settlement, and the unique geology of the area.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pause for 2–3 hours to stretch their legs on a short walk and grab a bite, but if you have a full day you can tackle the Haast Pass walks, visit Jackson Bay, and do a jet boat ride. For those breaking the drive between Wanaka and the West Coast, an overnight stay lets you experience the area’s moody evening light and morning mist.
