Gillespies Beach Track is a wild, windswept walk on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, offering a glimpse into gold-mining history and dramatic coastal scenery. This easy track leads from the car park through lush native bush and past historic gold-mining relics to a vast, dark-sand beach pounded by Tasman Sea surf. It's a perfect short escape for those driving the Glaciers region, combining nature, history, and solitude.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours on the track, which is a 40-minute loop (including the beach). Combine it with a stop at nearby Fox Glacier or Franz Josef Glacier for a half-day of exploration. If you have more time, linger on the beach for a picnic or a stroll – the track is easy and suitable for all fitness levels.
